The American Century Theater presents On the Waterfront - the stage version of Budd Schulberg’s screenplay for the 1954 movie classic about union violence and corruption on the New York docks. There are many differences from the film that won 8 Academy awards, but all the vivid characters, speeches and drama remain, with some surprises in store for fans of Elia Kazan’s masterpiece.

The longshoremen of On The Waterfront work and live in the tough and gritty world of New York’s dockyards. These men have limited options – and the economic system they have inherited renders any choice a negative. Yet in these circumstances, we find hints of faith, conscience, love and brotherhood emerge. The story’s primary catalyst was a Pulitzer Prize-winning series of articles written for The New York Sun about the power of mob bosses on the New York docks. Schulberg interviewed the crusading priest, the Rev. John M. Corridan, who fought for the dockworkers’ cause and became a model for the movie’s “Father Barry,” memorably played by the late Karl Malden. The script won one of eight 1954 Oscars awarded to the film, which has come to be regarded as one of the very best movies ever made. Schulberg’s original vision of the script, however, fell short, and he spent many years of his life working on the stage version you will experience at The American Century Theater.

Kathleen Akerley returns to TACT for this unique project, with an ensemble cast that includes Dan Corey, Joe Cronin, Matt Dewberry, Cyle Durkee, William Hayes, Tyler Herman, Chris Herring, Christopher Holbert, Graham Pilato, Jack Powers, Bruce Rauscher and Caitlin Shea.

On The Waterfront’s Assistant Director is Kristen Pilgrim. Technical Director is Jonathan Hudspeth. Elizabeth Jenkins McFadden is the Set Designer, Neil McFadden is the Sound Designer, and Marianne Meadows is the Lighting Designer. Alison S. Johnson is the Costume Designer and Rebecca Dieffenbach is the Properties Designer. Sarah Conte is the Stage Manager and Jacob Lunsford is Master Carpenter.
